Inspiring Futures: A Visit from Dr. Ethan Helm

As many of the children in our care step into a pivotal stage of life, discovering who they are, preparing for university, and daring to dream about the future – we remain deeply committed to walking alongside them. This season of growth is filled with questions, hope, and the occasional challenge. To support them on this journey, we’ve begun inviting individuals from diverse backgrounds and professions, people who are doing meaningful, inspiring work—to share their stories.

Last Sunday, we had the joy of welcoming Dr. Ethan Helm, a pediatrician and medical missionary, together with his wife, Dr. Elizabeth, and their three children. Ethan shared a deeply personal and powerful journey. As a teenager, he was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin lymphoma, a diagnosis that changed the course of his life.

From the United States to Cameroon to Cambodia, Ethan has since dedicated his life to bringing both physical and spiritual healing to those in need. He now works at Hebron Hospital in Phnom Penh.

But what made Ethan’s visit so impactful wasn’t just his experience or qualifications—it was his honesty. He spoke with warmth and humility about resilience, faith, and the choices we all face: to dwell in hardship, or to turn that pain into purpose.

“You can choose to stay positive and help others,” he told our students, “or let negativity consume you.”

For our kids, these weren’t just inspiring words, they were grounding ones.

Real stories like Ethan’s open doors in our students’ hearts that textbooks cannot. They spark new dreams, build self-belief, and help our young people connect with the wider world and its possibilities.

We’re incredibly grateful to Dr. Ethan and Dr. Elizabeth for spending their Sunday with us. Their presence planted seeds of hope, courage, and curiosity—and reminded us all that even the hardest roads can lead to something beautiful.
