A Field Trip to Kratie Province

Recently our very own Michael, who is currently studying Graphic Design at the Royal University of Fine Arts, participated in a field trip to Kratie, a province to the east of Phnom Penh along the Mekong River, where he and his fellow students conducted research for a heritage-based design project. The initiative focused on transforming qualitative research data into creative outputs such as posters, banners, billboards, and a book aimed at promoting tourism in Kratie.

On the first day, the students visited Prasat Preah Theat, an ancient temple rich in cultural and architectural significance in Tboung Khmum province. They then continued to Kratie and visited a historic wooden house known locally as P’tes Sor Sor 100 (House of 100 Columns) to analyze its structure and materials, and to understand its significance to local communities and to the architectural heritage of the province.

On the second day, they visited Wat Sor Sor 100, a pagoda closely connected to the history of the House of 100 Columns, as well as several other traditional Khmer houses. Here, students gathered historical and folk narratives to better understand the spiritual and cultural role of the site within the community. Michael was part of the Interview & Research Team, tasked with conducting interviews and taking field notes. He engaged with local villagers and monks, asking questions about the history and legends associated with the structures being studied. His contributions will ensure that the final design outputs are rooted in authentic local narratives.

“I really liked taking part in the oral research,” said Michael. “Walking around and interacting with villagers, gaining their trust, and asking the right questions – it showed me how difficult, but also how rewarding, ethnography can be. It was really hot out there, though!”

On the way home on the final day, the group visited Prasat Nokor Bachey in Kampong Cham province, one of Cambodia’s most remarkable ancient temples.

Through this initiative, the students not only strengthened their research and communication skills but also contributed to the promotion of Cambodia’s cultural heritage. We can’t wait to see what cool graphic design products they will create based on the field trip!
