Dara Goes to Technical School

At just 16 years old, Dara Phalla is stepping confidently into a new chapter of his life, one shaped by perseverance, independent thinking, and hands-on learning. After finishing middle school, Dara began a path that aligns with his strengths, interests, and potential by enrolling in Don Bosco Technical School in Phnom Penh to study Electrical Engineering and Mechanics.

Dara learns best through experience. He naturally excels in practical, skills-based learning and has a strong interest in fixing, building, and figuring out how things work. Whether it’s mechanics or electrical systems, Dara’s curiosity and ability to learn by doing have always stood out. Recognizing this, he opted to continue his education in a technical school, where his abilities could grow and flourish.

One thing that has always defined Dara is his bright smile. Even during challenging times he carries himself with positivity. His smile has become his calling card, often reminding those around him to stay hopeful, keep going, and believe that better days are ahead.

After middle school, Dara used his break productively by reviewing and learning more about mechanical and technical subjects. In the last week of November, he took the entrance examination for Don Bosco Technical School and passed it, marking a milestone he will never forget.

Dara’s journey is especially meaningful, as it follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Chamrong, a former Little Hearts resident who also studied at Don Bosco and has now been gainfully employed in a private company for five years. His brother’s story continues to inspire Dara as he builds his own future.

Dara began his classes on December 8th and is now staying at the institute’s dormitory due to the distance between the school and Little Hearts. While this is a big adjustment, it is also an important step towards independence and personal growth. Though his path is different from his brothers and sisters at Little Hearts, it marks a promising beginning, one filled with learning, exploration, and new possibilities. Dara will return home every last weekend of the month, which will allow him to stay connected with his Little Hearts family while continuing his studies. His course will take two years to complete, followed by an internship that will prepare him for the real-world workforce.

Dara shared his thoughts about this transition:

“I am happy with this new chapter in my life. Even though I’m not studying in the same school as my brothers and sisters at Little Hearts, I know I will still see them every month. During the entrance exam, I was very nervous because I was not confident that I would pass. When I found out that I’d passed, I couldn’t explain how I felt.”

He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude:

“I want to thank my Little Hearts family, especially Dad Tony, who is always there to support us. I am also thankful to the teachers at Little Hearts who guided me, from filling out documents to accompanying me to the entrance exam. To all our sponsors who make our dreams possible, thank you.”

Dara ended with a promise filled with determination and hope:

“I will work hard and do my best to reach my goals and dreams not only for myself, but also for everyone who has supported and believed in me.”

We are incredibly proud of Dara. His journey is a reminder that every child has unique strengths, and with the right guidance, support, and opportunity, these strengths can lead to a bright future. We look forward to seeing how Dara continues to grow, aided by his signature smile and steady determination.
