Teamwork makes the dream work!

A few weeks ago Little Hearts was visited by School Aid Japan and the Sok Sabay Association. These 2 NGOs in Cambodia fight for equal opportunities for all the children in the country. They work together directly with schools and organizations to ensure that the level of education in Cambodia is improved. They shared their experience and knowledge with Little Hearts and we will continue to work with them. To close off the visit,  the children of Little Hearts and the Sok Sabay Association participated in a dance contest at our home. For the children it was a fantastic ending to a very exciting day:

Saum arkoun!

Little Hearts received the official license to continue its work. Receiving such a licence is not an evident matter. All organizations in Cambodia are now thoroughly checked and inspected for weeks. Every year many organizations have to close their doors because of legal matters not being in order. There used to be more than 60 organizations like ours in and around Phnom Penh, after this year's inspection there are only 12 left that got a license to continue their work.
The fact that Little Hearts received the approval to continue its work is entirely thanks to you. If it wasn’t for all the help, support and contributions from employees, volunteers, sponsors, monthly donors, friends and family, this would not have been possible. Hereby we would like to thank you very much. 🙏🏼 SAUM ARKOUN (= thank you in Khmer).

Back to school

For six long months the schools in Cambodia were closed because of the Coranavirus. Now finally the children can go back to school. They are so happy to see their friends again! Just like Belgian pupils, our children had online education and had to learn to be independent for a lot of tasks. They did excellently! The principal of the Mahasastra School was impressed by their dedication and determination. We are very proud that all children passed and moved on to the next year.

Breaking news!

It took quite some brainstorming and a lot of work, but we have a new website. Little Hearts is proud to present the new website to every one of you. On it you can find information, a photo page with the latest pictures and a link to the donors website. Our biggest sponsors will get a place of honor on the site. We especially want to thank Yentl from Respux.be for the enormous help he has been in this project. Without Yentl we would not have been able to do this. Click quickly and enjoy the result.

Sharing is caring

Covid-19 causes a lot of problems in Cambodia as well. People lose their jobs and have no financial support. In Arey Ksat, the village where LH is located, poverty is clearly visible. Tony contacted the Belgian embassy and spoke to them about how he could organize help for families from the surrounding villages. In cooperation with Oxfam Cambodia a large aid action was set up. Oxfam provided food parcels, clothing and Khmer/English textbooks. Little Hearts distributed aid packages to 80 poor families. The Little Hearts children were closely involved helping out with distributing. It was a day full of emotions, a day that will not soon be forgotten.
Check out our facebook page to get an idea on how that day went:

Out of the Little Hearts diary

Our children are encouraged to write and read in English. They get better and better at this. They like to share their experiences with their Belgian friends. The article below was written by one of our kids...

Since Covid-19 started in Cambodia, all the countries have changed. In Cambodia the schools stopped everywhere, all the students can not go to school now until October. We have been studying online since March, it seems so difficult for us to catch up with the lessons but we always do our best and trying to improve and learn. Only when the internet stops working and we can not ask teacher or misunderstand that was really difficult and also exhausting. But now we have some teachers come LH to teach and we just received news that the school will be open again soon, so happy because we didn’t see our friends at school and we missed them a lot. We do have a good daily program with lots of activities besides daily maintenance, Khmer and English class. Activities we really enjoy were the lip song challenge, dance competition and “estafette retteketet“ was so much fun… We sometimes go out on bicycle trips with our brother and sisters or short trips to the market or pagoda but not to far and always careful. One thing made us feel sad was Khmer New Year because we cannot celebrate during Covid-19, but dad decided to organise a Khmer New Year at little hearts for us. Now Pchum Ben Day is coming this week and we can not go to home town, so dad has decided to go to pagoda together as one big family. We watch the BBC news every day, we discuss and understand the situation in Cambodia and around the world, we wish and hope one day Covid-19 will go away from the world and everything hopefully will be back normal again. We really wish everyone the best and as Ms Roxanne always says “Start every day with a smile on your face“.
