The Big Little Hearts
Anniversary Party

It happened! Little Hearts turned 10 years old and we certainly celebrated! Another fantastic party that would not have been such a success without all of you. To all those who were present: you are great! You can find memorable photo’s on our Facebook page: take a look and ‘tag along’!

Sothon, landscape architect
to be!

Sothon, one of our oldest boys, studies agriculture at the university. We want to make it possible for him to put theory into practice. He already has the Aquaponics-project and the compost system under his belt. Additionally he made his own kitchen garden which we call ‘Sothon’s vegetable garden’. It was fantastic to see how, in no time, he magically turned a piece of land into a thriving and verdant garden. His actions inspire the other children and our Ma Kuhn can now cook with vegetables that we grew ourselves. We are so excited about our farm to table diet.

Billy, our Mr. Fix-It, in the picture

Billy is one of our most loyal members of staff. He is truly a jack of all trades. He takes our youngest children to school every day, he takes care of the garden, he sorts the waste, takes care of small repairs and is a support to all of our children. That is quite a feat considering that we have almost 40 children under one roof, wow!

Exam stress!!!

Just like in Belgium, June is exams month in Cambodia. To give some extra support to our children during this stressful time, we asked two teachers to give extra classes at night. The older children help out too, they each take one of their younger brothers or sisters under their wings to share useful tips and tricks so that they can pass their exams with no problems and little stress. Fingers crossed on results! We want everyone to enjoy well deserved holidays!

Work hard, play harder

Next to all the hard work and the studying everyone has the right to relax and play. At Little Hearts we wholeheartedly support this. A game of football with the children from the neighborhood, a creative drawing class - we try to offer as much variety as possible so that each child can discover their interests. Thanks to the enthusiastic Claire our children also enjoyed an intensive Zumba class. What a great way to use up all of the energy. Thank you so much, Claire, for bringing this positive vibe and getting everybody swinging!

The light in the darkness

Power interruptions used to happen a lot at Little Hearts. Almost every day we had power cuts, sometimes even several times a day. Our computer and evening classes had to be cancelled, the washing machines stropped turning, the children had to take a shower in dark bathrooms: a lot of misery and frustration. BUT: this is all in the past now! Thanks to the NGO Engineers Without Frontiers we found THE solution. Luc Stevens, volunteer / engineer, took the lead in research, setting up a plan and found solutions for our problem. The power net in the orphanage was renewed and a battery and inverter were purchased. This battery will provide power to Little Hearts whenever there is a power cut.

In March Luc Stevens and Katrine Horemans came to Cambodia to lead a team of Cambodian electricians with the renovation of the system, setting up a new power box and replacing all the power outlets and switches. It was a hell of a job and a race against time in the scorching heat. James, our teacher/educator and the oldest children helped getting everything done in time. And… THEY DID IT! Thanks to Luc’s expertise, his help and his enthusiasm power cuts are in the past for Little Hearts. Thank you so much Luc Stevens and thank you Engineers Without Frontiers! We will never forget you. You were our light in the darkness!!

Our own ‘warmest week’ activations this summer?

Summer holidays are nearly there. Yay! Do you still have some spare time this summer? Would you like to organize a fundraising event for Little Hearts? If so, we’d love to hear about it! In the summer we need you more than ever. Be original! Cook up a gigantic pile of pancakes, make bracelets to sell at a fair or build a lemonade stand for thirsty Belgians to support Little Hearts. Make your summer a little warmer and support Little Hearts!

A big "Thank You" to all supporting schools!

The arrival of the summer holidays also means the end of a fun school year. Again we want to thank all the schools that organized events to support Little Hearts. Time and time again we are amazed by your enthusiasm and the work you do in support of us. Thanks to you we can give our children a beautiful future, which is truly the best gift of all.

Does your school want to organize something for Little Hearts? Get in touch with Katrine ( katrine@littlehearts.be ) or Jan ( jan@littlehearts.be ). They will be happy to help you get started!
